March 31st, 2010 is the deadline to file papers for challengers looking to run for local office. Local businessman Tom Broeker announced that he intends to seek a seat on the Des Moines County Supervisors board. Broeker announced his intentions on a local radio station. He released the following statement:
"I hadn't seriously considered running until last weekend and it wasn't until Sunday afternoon that I decided it was the right thing to do. So I downloaded petitions from the Secretary of State website and started with my wife's signature.
The primary reason I'm running is this:
Taxpayers need a voice.
In today's economy, taxpayers are dealing with wage cuts & layoffs and being forced to make do with less. Small businesses are struggling to stay afloat. In the midst of these struggles, taxpayers are being hit with tax increases because governmental bodies are apparently 'unable' or unwilling to cut their budgets.
It is not the taxpayers' job to serve as a human shield to protect government agencies from economic realities and I will approach the county budget with that mindset.
Everyone knows the future is going to bring some hard decisions; the voters deserve a choice in who it is that they want making those decisions."
Tom Broeker
